Our Ph.D. program trains students in traditional core areas of philosophy and provides them with opportunities to explore many subfields such as the philosophy of literature, nineteenth-century German philosophy, and medieval philosophy. Introduction: Boundaries of the Debate. The topic of free speech is one of the most contentious issues in liberal societies.

Courses in Stanford's other departments and programs may be counted towards the degree, and course requirements in Philosophy are designed to allow students considerable freedom in taking such courses. Dissertation committees may include members from other departments. The Philosophy department examines the efforts of past thinkers to understand the world and people’s experience of it.

The pickings were meager in terms of topics, but that reflects the depth and breadth of human experience, which in philosophy can be very focused at a given time because of how deeply philosophers are expected to dive in order to create new knowledge these days.
